DJXPERIENCE: The DJ Dad

In a surprising turn from his DJing roots, a DJ reflects on how fatherhood has transformed his perspective, infusing his music and career with new depth and purpose.

When I first stepped into the DJ booth nearly two decades ago, thoughts of marriage and fatherhood were far from my mind. I envisioned a life of endless nights spinning beats around the globe, unencumbered by the responsibilities of family life. Little did I know, becoming a father 10 months ago would completely shift that perspective.

Fatherhood has brought a newfound depth to my music, my career, and my outlook on life. While I've always prided myself on being self motivated, becoming a dad has added a new layer of focus and purpose to my drive. It's not just about being a better DJ anymore; it's about being the best version of myself for my family.

Seeing my daughter light up at the sound of music brings me unparalleled joy. Whether it's tinkering on the keys of my electric organ or watching records spin on my Technics 1200s, her enthusiasm is infectious. She's already mastering the art of "baby scratches" and has a knack for timing that rivals even the most seasoned DJs! That in itself, has helped me focus and hone in on my work as I watch her reactions.

But balancing my roles as a father and a DJ hasn't always been easy. Sacrifices have been made, and adjustments have been necessary. Less time in the studio and more time with my family wasn't part of the plan, but it's a trade-off I gladly make. Staying organized and managing my time has become paramount.

Finding that equilibrium between family and career has been a learning process. I've had to recalibrate my priorities and reevaluate how I allocate my time. While I may not always be as diligent with follow-ups or bookings as I once was, every moment spent with my daughter is worth it. Ironically, it is my daughter whom has taught me how to better balance my work, as I balance my priorities, making me more effective and time efficient when I am wearing my “DJ hat.”

As I navigate this journey of fatherhood and entertainment, my goal remains constant: to grow and improve each day. Challenges will undoubtedly arise, but with the unwavering support of my family, I know I can overcome them. The "DJ Dad" life may not have been what I anticipated, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Arabella Reign Torres, you are my little work of art, and I cherish every moment we share.
